Fools Made Wise #71

Proverbs 12:4:

A worthy woman is the crown of her husband,
but a disgraceful wife is as rottenness in his bones.

The seventy-first comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Pop and Mom at a nice restaurant celebrating their anniversary. Pop tells Mom that he is so lucky to have a woman like her by his side, and that she is his glory and his crown. This reminds us of the first part of Proverbs 12:4, that “A worthy woman is the crown of her husband.” That is Mom alright: in Jesus, she’s a blessing to Pop and to everyone around him.

The scene then shifts to Leroy leaving a message for Val (the woman he met at the bar in comic #54). Leroy wishes her a happy 1-week anniversary since they first locked eyes at the bar. Leroy tells her that he is so lucky to have a smoking hot babe like her.

In the next panel, Leroy continues his message to her. He tells her that even though she is “technically” married, he wants to overlook that little detail. Val makes Leroy weak in his bones. He asks Val to call him when she gets a chance and that he will be waiting by the phone. This part of the comic shows us the second part of Proverbs 12:4, that a “disgraceful wife is as rottenness in his bones.” That’s Val alright: outside of Jesus, living life by whatever she thinks is right and wrong, sadly spreading rottenness all around her instead of blessing.

This comic ends with Leroy fawning over Val even more: he tells her that she completes Leroy in every possible way (Ah! No! Only God can do that!) In Leroy’s eyes, everyone thinks his parents have it good; just wait until they see Leroy and Val!

Unfortunately, no person in this life can complete us like a relationship with God can. If we look to them to fill us, we are putting a weight on them that is impossible for them to carry. The reason Pop and Mom’s relationship works is because they are both looking to Jesus for love: He loves them both, and with His love, they are able to love each other. May we learn from them how life really works: with God in the center and everything else flowing from our relationship with Him. Now THAT’S something worth showing the world!
