Fools Made Wise #76

Proverbs 12:9:

Better is he who is little known, and has a servant, than he who honors himself, and lacks bread.

The seventy-sixth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy sitting on a park bench, watching two men working hard trimming the hedges in front of him. Leroy snickers to himself, “Look at these guys, wasting their lives away working. Fools!”

Leroy continues his diatribe against people who work: “Some people are so rich and important that they have slaves doing all their work for them. Blech!”

He then tells the men working to break free, to throw off their “Master’s shackles” and to be free like Leroy. In other words, to stop working, be lazy, and depend on the system.

Leroy’s “anti-work” rhetoric catches up to him in the last panel when his stomach starts rumbling. He retorts to himself that he needs to get something else to eat and that being his own master (followed to it’s logical end) isn’t great on the ol’ stomach. Of course it’s not.

This comic shows us the truth found in Proverbs 12:9, that “Better is he who is little known, and has a servant, than he who honors himself, and lacks bread.”

Working hard day in and day out without trumpets and fanfare, doing the right thing because it IS the right thing, and having others who work for you (presumably because you are a person of character) is far better than honoring yourself and lacking bread. When you work hard and honor others, you will more than enough to share. But when you are at the center of your own universe (much like Leroy is), only thinking about yourself, watch out for the inevitable lack and “stomach grumbling” (emptiness) that follows.

Thank God we have a Savior who humbled Himself, came here, and met our greatest needs through His life, death, and resurrection. He promises in John 6:35, “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” May we richly partake of all Jesus did for us, and then share that with others in need!
