Fools Made Wise #78

Proverbs 12:11:

He who tills his land shall have plenty of bread, but he who chases fantasies is void of understanding.

The seventy-eighth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy outside at night, noticing it is getting late. Since he has no place to go, he decides he better head to his “friend” Zoobie’s house. When he gets there, he hits the doorbell and waits exactly zero seconds to let himself in.

Leroy starts to unpack a litany of stolen items: gold earrings and a diamond engagement ring that belong to his mother (comic #35), silver forks and knives (comic #37), a shovel and work gloves from his neighbor, Mr. Sanderson (comic #41), a rope from another neighbor, Tucker (comic #44), money from his gossip station (comic #45), and fruit from the farm stand (comic #58). Zoobie sees all this stuff sprawled out on the floor, and wonders how long “temporary” is really going to be to Leroy.

Leroy dismisses the issue as a silly word game, and Zoobie outright tells him that he can’t stay in his house forever. Leroy responds that he just needs a place to stay until his birthday lottery numbers are called.

At hearing this, Zoobie spits out his soda and asks him about getting a job instead. Leroy tells him, very matter-of-factly: “Forget the shaky ground of regular employment. Leroy signed up for a sure-fire Publisher’s Clearing House drawing, and his Ma’s pearly necklace got him a huge stack of scratch-offs. Leroy will be out of here in no time!”

Proverbs 12:11 tells us that He who tills his land shall have plenty of bread, but he who chases fantasies is void of understanding. As you can see, everything with Leroy is backwards. What he thinks is shaky ground is firm ground. What is firm to him is actually shaky. He steals from his own mother and pawns it off on chance. If only Leroy would listen to this
Proverb, stop chasing fantasies, get real understanding, and work hard, then he will have what he’s looking for in the end.

May we learn from this Proverb, too, that with the Word of God firmly in hand, we don’t have to “chase fantasies” anymore; we have something solid and firm to build our lives upon. And as we do, He brings an abundance of understanding and stability to us that our souls are crying out for. Abundance, substance, depth, maturity… as always, though, the choice is ours.
