Proverbs 12:3:
A man shall not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.
The seventieth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy in Petey’s car, talking to himself. He figures that now that he is free from his family’s clutches, he probably should find a place to stay. The next three images are places he tries: 1) He tries a cave, but it is too dark for him. 2) He tries a park bench, but it too cramped. And 3) He tries a tent in a store at the mall, but it is too crowded for his liking.
Leroy realizes he is 0 for 3, showing us the first part of Proverbs 12:3, that “A man shall not be established by wickedness…”. As Leroy thinks about what to do next, Clayto walks by. Leroy tells him he is just the person he wanted to see, and that he needs a place to crash for a while. He even uses one of his famous lines on Clayto: “C’mon, you know Ol’ Royski’s good for it.”
Unfortunately not moved by Leroy’s imploring, Clayto asks him why he is leaving home. He reminds him that his brother has ALL he needs there, but he doesn’t (reminding us of the second part of Proverbs 12:3, that “the root of the righteous shall not be moved.” He then does what good friends do; he gives Leroy a challenge that can actually help him (i.e. going back home).
In typical Leroy fashion, he balks at this and tells Clayto that he just barely escaped “family’s foolishness” and Clayto wants him to go back? Leroy then says the wisest thing he’s said in a long time: “There’s no wisdom found on a fools’ lips!” Leroy thinks it applies to Clayto, but it actually applies to him. As the comic ends, Clayto catches this. But the real question is: where will we turn to find wisdom to guide our lives?
If Leroy has shown us anything, it’s been to NOT lean on our OWN understanding. Doing that can get us into trouble REAL quick! The better, WISER way to live is to trust in the Lord with all our hearts; to know Him deeply and intimately, and He will direct our paths. Truly THIS is the way we will be established and not moved! May we have the grace to choose wisely today!
