Fools Made Wise #68

Proverbs 12:1:

Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.

The sixty-eighth comic of Fools Made Wise starts the comics from chapter 12 of Proverbs (I started Fools Made Wise in Proverbs 10 and 11, then wove in the first letter from Pop to Leroy from
Proverbs 1:1-9. After the comics from Proverbs 12, Pop is going to send another letter (covering Proverbs 1:10-19). And on and on we will go with comics and letters!)

So this comic starts with James asking Pop how his letter to Leroy is coming. Pop tells him he finished it and asks James if he minds taking it to him.

James tells him that he can, but tells Pop that he doesn’t think Leroy is going to listen to it. His assessment of Leroy is that he’s NOT the type to love correction and knowledge; Leroy seems to be allergic to both things.

Pop shoots back, a little more humbly, that James’ description describes us all (i.e. we don’t naturally love correction and knowledge). Instead of letting that sink in, James says that Leroy is worse than most because he hates all reproof, and (in James’ eyes) is quite stupid for it. James’ anger toward Leroy is going to grow in the coming comics, as is typical for people who do the right thing but whose heart grows hard in the process.

Pop responds that he is praying that God will turn Leroy’s heart… and that maybe James should pray too. James tells Pop that his only prayer is that Leroy would stay away from them; the further Leroy stays, the better!

This interaction reminds us of Proverbs 12:1: “Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.” Leroy has consistently hated correction knowledge, and reproof, to his own demise. May we learn from him to do just the opposite: to love correction, knowledge, and reproof, for our growth and delight!
