Fools Made Wise #67

Proverbs 1:7-9:
The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. My son, listen to your father’s
instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching:
for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.

The sixty-seventh comic of Fools Made Wise is the third comic of three of Pop’s first letter to Leroy (Proverbs 1-9 are letters from a father to his son, imploring him to choose wisdom over foolishness).

Pop finishes his letter by telling Leroy that the starting point to real knowledge is for him to finally accept God as the creator and sustainer of all things, to fear, honor, and worship God as such. That’s Pop’s first lesson to Leroy.

Pop reminds Leroy of something his father taught him: “Fearing God is a holy-God consciousness that permeates all of life.” He implores Leroy to not ignore this, and to really listen to what he and Mom are saying to him. He promises Leroy that it will lead him to an attractive and honorable life.

Pop ends his letter by telling Leroy that they love him. The goal of Pop’s letters are love and to help Leroy come to know Jesus and to grow in the wisdom that is found in Him.

The ending of Pop’s letter reminds us of Proverbs 1:7-9: The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching: for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.

This is the heart of Pop’s letter to Leroy. He wants Leroy to fear the Lord; that is the true beginning of knowledge. For when we know God, we begin to know everything else rightly.

May we learn from Pop (and these amazing verses from Proverbs) to live with a “holy-God consciousness that permeates all our lives.” It really DOES lead to an attractive and honorable life!
