Proverbs 11:23:
The desire of the righteous is only good. The expectation of the wicked is wrath.
The fifty-fifth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy asking James what he is working on. James answers him that he is writing a letter to his girlfriend, Wendy. James tells Leroy that their relationship is going very well, and he can see them getting married in the future. This shows us the first part of Proverbs 11:23, that “The desire of the righteous is only good.”
The mere mention of marriage turns Leroy’s stomach. He scolds James for his ‘outdated’ conventions, and tells James that he met the most smoking hot babe at the bar, a lady that was all over him and to Leroy “might be the one.”
James fires right back at Leroy that it’s God’s will for us to save sex for marriage. He asks Leroy point-blank if he even knows this woman’s name. Leroy tells him “true love” doesn’t care about
trivial details like that, and James answers Leroy according to his folly by telling him that God anger toward his sin and his plans for marriage don’t matter all that much in light of Leroy getting what he really wants. James’ rebuke of Leroy reminds us of the second part of Proverbs 11:23, that “The expectation of the wicked is wrath.”
Despite the wisdom that James is trying to share with him, Leroy only latches on to the last thing James said about him getting what he wants. Leroy rejoices that James is finally seeing things “his way”, and welcomes him to the 21st century. Sigh… Oh Leroy.
This comic reminds us that when we come to faith in Jesus, He gives us a new heart with new desires. We want what HE wants. But before we put our trust in Jesus, our hearts are still enslaved to sin and we want what WE want. So as new people with new hearts, may we desire God’s best for our lives; there’s nothing better than that!
