Fools Made Wise #52

Proverbs 11:20:

Those who are perverse in heart are an abomination to Yahweh, but those whose ways are blameless are his delight.

The fifty-second comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy flabbergasted why “treasure girl” (AKA Sophia) would pay Dally forty dollars to save Leroy’s life (see comic 51 for that story). To Leroy, who is always broke, that’s a lot of money.

Sophia tells him that it was the right thing to do and that she thinks God was pleased with it. This shows us the second part of Proverbs 11:20, that “Those whose ways are blameless are his (Yahweh’s) delight.”

Leroy almost hurls and says that she sounds just like his brother. Sophia retorts with a smirk that his brother sounds like a pretty wise man. Leroy tells her that he isn’t and then asks her if she has any more greenbacks that he could have. He even tries to tell her that he is “good for it.” This shows us the first part of Proverbs 11:20, that “Those who are perverse in heart are an abomination to Yahweh.” Unfortunately, that describes Leroy way too many times!

This comic ends with Sophia telling Leroy (AKA “foolish guy”) that she has to go, and encouraging him to not get himself into so much trouble. She tells Leroy that she is going to see him around, and that is EXACTLY what is about to happen. In the comics ahead, Leroy is going to keep running into Sophia. And since Leroy represents foolishness and Sophia represents wisdom, get ready for some very interesting interactions between them!

In the end, this comic shows us the choice we have between perverse ways or blameless ways. Paul reminds us of this same choice in Romans 8:6: “For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” So, like Sophia, may we set our minds on the Spirit, follow Him, and see how God brings life and peace into our lives as a result.
