Fools Made Wise #38

Proverbs 11:6:

The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, but the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires.

The thirty-eighth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy with a shovel and a map in his hand. James asks him where he is going with that shovel and Leroy tells him that he found their old treasure map, and he is going to go dig up the booty.

James reminds Leroy that they were kids when they made up that map and that he is not sure he buried a whole lot of treasure. Leroy scoffs at this, telling James he is just saying that because he doesn’t want Leroy finding the loot. Leroy tells him that he will just find the treasure by himself.

James tells him that is a good idea because his treasure is stored up in heaven anyway. This shows us the first part of Proverbs 11:6, that “the righteousness of the upright shall deliver them.”
Because James has trusted Jesus, his treasures are in heaven; Jesus has covered James with His righteousness. That is a treasure worth more than anything on this earth… and is a treasure that delivers us from worthless pursuits of lesser treasures.

Leroy, who normally is allergic to hard work, digs and digs and digs, and the comic ends a few hours later with Leroy deep in a hole. James comes back, sees him down pretty deep, and asks him how he is going to get out of there. Leroy asks him to go get a rope, and promises that he will pay James 10 schillings when he finds the treasure. In Leroy’s mind, just like those who trust in get-rich-quick schemes, he is almost there! This reminds us of the second part of Proverbs 11:6, that “the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires.”

So may we learn from Leroy what we pursue and how we pursue it matters. The only worthy pursuit in this life is a relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Everything else will leave us empty in a hole!
