Proverbs 11:5:
The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way, but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
The thirty-seventh comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy tiptoeing around in the attic. He is trying to be super careful on the cracked and creaking attic floors as he looks for a costly heirloom that could get him some cash.
Leroy is elated to find a very expensive silverware set. He opens the lid and reads a letter to Pop and Mom: “To Phil and Katherine, this is probably the most expensive thing we own but we felt like God was directing us to give it to you. Congratulations on your wedding day!” Their selfless gift shows us the first part of Proverbs 11:6, that the righteousness of the blameless will direct his way.
In startling contrast, we see Leroy selfishly processing that if this set has been up here this long, his parents sure wouldn’t miss it. Leroy needs cash, and that’s all that matters.
As Leroy pushes it aside, he fails to see the cracks under the silver set. He ends up falling through the ceiling and lands with a thud on the ground below. Seeing Leroy fall, James asks him if he is okay. Leroy responds to “stick a fork in him because he’s done.” This shows us the second part of Proverbs 11:6, that “the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.”
This comic shows us that something is going to direct our paths: either righteousness or wickedness. When we allow God’s righteousness to guide us, we can expect to be guided by His grace in our life. But if we allow wickedness to guide us, we can expect to fall. May we be a people who love righteousness and walk in God’s ways instead of the cracked, creaking, and self-destructive ways of foolishness.
