Fools Made Wise #36

Proverbs 11:4:

Riches don’t profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

The thirty-sixth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy sitting on the couch doing an “inventory check” of all the stuff he has stolen. To date (as seen in recent comics), he has stolen gold, diamonds, and pearls, and he is hoping to pawn them off for some quick cash.

James comes in and asks Leroy what he is doing. Unfazed by James, Leroy continues writing his inventory, and tells James its none of his business. James looks at Leroy’s paper and reads out loud: “Comprehensive list of Leroy’s riches— in other words, things that will make Leroy eternally happy.”

James reminds Leroy that STUFF can’t save him from death; only God make him eternally happy. This reminds us of Proverbs 11:4, that riches don’t profit in the day or wrath, but
righteousness delivers from death.
It doesn’t matter how many riches we have: if we don’t have Jesus, we don’t have life (1 John 5:12).

Fed up that every conversation is about God, Leroy tells James that all he talks about is death and dying, and that he needs to change the channel. James reminds him, yet again, that stuff can’t satisfy his heart because it is just too small.

Forever the smart-aleck, Leroy finally “admits” that James is right. He tells him that he needs to get MORE stuff and BIGGER stuff to fill his heart, and that finally, James said something he can use. But may we see that Leroy is dead wrong about this, and the only thing that can really satisfy our hearts is a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Let’s not settle for anything less than true righteousness that leads to life!
