Proverbs 10:29:
The way of Yahweh is a stronghold to the upright, but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.
The twenty-ninth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy fuming at Pop. James sees that he is mad, and asks him what is wrong. Leroy tells him that Pop expects Leroy to work forty-five hours that week. To Leroy, that is an outrageous demand that he shouldn’t be expected to do.
James tells Leroy that honoring their parents and living wisely isn’t meant to destroy him, but is God’s idea to bless him (if he would just apply it!) James is showing us that he understands the first part of Proverbs 10:29, that the way of Yahweh is a stronghold to the upright. In other words, those who follow God and His ways are choosing to buoy their lives with His strength. Nothing could be wiser!
Like he does every week, Leroy balks at this. He thinks that everything James is telling him is only meant to destroy him, one painful hour at a time. This comic ends with Leroy telling James that something has to change, or everything he’s worked so hard for will be gone.
So despite not knowing the importance of what he is saying, Leroy is proving the second part of Proverbs 10:29 to be true, that (the way of God) is a destruction to the workers of iniquity. In other words, those who reject God and do their own thing, do so at their own peril. Nothing could be more foolish!
In sum, this proverb shows us that doing things God’s way is the best choice for us in this life. So with His help, may we choose the wiser, better way to live that will bring strength to us for
decades to come!
