Fools Made Wise #61

Proverbs 11:29:

He who troubles his own house shall inherit the wind. The foolish shall be servant to the wise of the heart.

The sixty first comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy standing in front of Petey’s car with a suitcase in his hand. He tells James that he is all packed up and ready to go, and asks him if he has any last words for Leroy before he goes?

James notices that Leroy has the poster from HIS room and Dad’s wrench sticking out from his suitcase. He calls Leroy out on it, and asks him what else he took of theirs. Leroy takes offense at this and tells James that somehow it’s always Leroy’s fault when things go missing around here. James forcefully reminds Leroy it IS his fault because he’s the one stealing things!

Leroy sees James escalating and tells him there’s no need to get all hot and bothered over it all. Leroy then tells him he is going to take the few meager items of his inheritance and hit the road. All of this conversation so far reminds us of the first part of Proverbs 11:29, “He who troubles his own house shall inherit the wind.”

James is thrilled Leroy is leaving, and Leroy tells him that he will be sorry (and will be “sniveling for the kickbacks”) when Leroy ends up working for someone smart and famous. What Leroy doesn’t understand is the second part of Proverbs 11:29, that “The foolish shall be servant to the wise of heart.” He thinks he is the master of his own fate, and that only good things are coming to him despite his foolishness. If only that were true…

James tells him he is really broken up over it, and that he will not be able to sleep for days. The comic ends with Leroy telling him to try some warm milk, and that he will have “his people” call James’ people to set that up.

May the height of Leroy’s folly yet again help us to see the beauty of wisdom: may we serve our households well (knowing that we have an inheritance waiting for us in heaven). And may we grow in being wise in heart, because that is far better for us than the alternative!
