Proverbs 11:28:
He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.
The sixtieth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy in his room, reviewing all the things he stole from others. He lays out the following items on the floor: a pearl necklace, gold earrings, and diamond ring (that he shamelessly stole from his mother in comic #35); silver folks, knives, and spoons (that he stole from the attic in comic #37); Mr. Sanderson’s shovel and gloves (stolen in comic #41); Tucker’s rope (stolen in comic #44); fifteen dollars that he made off his gossip station (comic #45); food from the farm stand (stolen in comic #58), and a miscellaneous box of goodies that he stole from around the house.
Leroy is quite impressed with himself, but Petey tells him that it really isn’t much. Petey tells Leroy that his brother has a whole lot more from just sticking around the farm, and that is flourishing while Leroy is languishing. This shows us both parts of Proverbs 11:28: “He who trusts in his riches will fall (i.e. what Leroy is doing); but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf (i.e. what James is doing by staying at home).
Leroy isn’t pleased with Petey’s advice to him. He tells him that this is just the beginning of Leroy’s riches, and the more he gets, the stronger he is going to become. In that day, he wont need naysayers weighing him down.
Petey tells Leroy to have a nice life, and never the one to miss an opportunity to mooch, Leroy asks him to borrow his car one last time. He offers Petey two silver forks to borrow it and tells him he is “good for it.”
This comic shows us the foolishness of trusting our own devices, and how much wiser it is to trust God. Trusting ourselves only leads to falling, but trusting God leads to flourishing. May Jesus give us the grace to choose wisely!
