Proverbs 11:18:
Wicked people earn deceitful wages, but one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
The fiftieth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy still at Crossroads Gas. He walks out after finishing his hamburger and is VERY thirsty, but has no way of buying a drink. He then gets a brilliant idea.
In the next panel, Leroy is standing by the pump, pretending to be the gas station attendant (in gas stations in other states, attendants pump your gas for you). A guy named Dally rolls up in a cool orange sports car. Leroy asks what he can get for him today and Dally gives him $20 to fill his tank with regular.
With the $20 in hand, Leroy tells Dally he needs to run inside to help a customer in need (i.e. himself!). This shows us the first part of Proverbs 11:18, that “Wicked people earn deceitful
wages.” Leroy did exactly that, getting $20 deceitfully.
To make matters worse, Leroy then tells Dally something Pop has told him numerous times, namely that “we will be blessed when we help others.” This shows us the second part of Proverbs 11:18, that “the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.” THIS is what Pop was trying to teach Leroy, but unfortunately, it did not stick.
The comic ends with Leroy bringing a bunch of beer up to the counter and telling Larry to keep the change because he is feeling especially generous today. We’re going to see the aftermath of this in the next few comics, but as this Proverb teaches us, Leroy acted wickedly, earned deceptive wages, and sowed to his own flesh. May we, because of Jesus, do the exact opposite: may we act righteously, seeking ways to give, and sow to the Spirit. As we do, we can be sure of a great reward from God!
