Proverbs 10:21:
The lips of the righteous feed many, but the foolish die for lack of understanding.
The twenty-first comic of Fools Made Wise starts with James and Leroy visiting Pop’s church, New Life Baptist Church. Pop is the guest preacher, and he is telling everyone that the key to eternal life is to shift our trust from what we can do for God to what He has done for us in Jesus. This shows us the first part of Proverbs 10:21, that the lips of the righteous feed many.
Of course, Leroy balks at this, and asks when his message is going to be over. Thirty minutes later, Leroy is fast asleep, and Mrs. Langhorne, a sweet older woman from Pop’s church, asks him what he thought of his father’s message.
Groggily, Leroy tells Mrs. Langhorne that all Pop talks about is trying harder and being better, and it kills him to listen to Pop talk about this over and over again. Mrs. Langhorne asks if there was anything Leroy liked from it, and Leroy blurts out that when Pop said, “It is finished,” that was his favorite part. This shows us the second part of Proverbs 10:21, that the foolish die for lack of understanding.
If only Leroy listened to what his father shared that day! He was NOT telling him to try harder and be better, but that we all need what Jesus did for us because we can’t save ourselves. When Jesus said “It is finished!” from the cross, He was saying that our sin debt was paid in full. In fact, in that day, when a debt was paid off, they would stamp TETELESTAI on the bottom of the receipt. Our debt has been paid in full. It is finished!
But like any gift, we have to receive this! We do that through admitting to God that we need what He did for us, believing that Jesus died on the cross and rose again, and calling on God to save us. The moment we do that, what Jesus did on the cross is applied to our account, and we are born again! So let’s learn from Leroy to be people of understanding so we receive this gift from God, become born again in Jesus, and then feed others with truth that can set them free!
