Proverbs 12:7:
The wicked are overthrown, and are no more, but the house of the righteous shall stand.
The seventy-fourth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy and Zoobie talking in the parking lot of the bar. In the previous comic (comic #73), Zoobie unwittingly foiled Leroy’s plot to beat up the beer guy for asking Leroy to leave (after he is there, all day, every day).
Leroy tells Zoobie that since he ruined his right to get even, there’s something he can do to get back into Leroy’s good favor (Oh, brother!). Zoobie rolls his eyes and reluctantly asks what it is.
Leroy comes out with it: Zoobie can let Leroy crash at his house for a while. He then uses his time-tested, favorite one-liner: “C’mon, you know Ol’ Royski’s good for it.”
Zoobie responds that he doesn’t know because he’s finally just getting his house established. Leroy cuts back in, not even hearing him. He tells him that if Zoobie doesn’t do this, he will be overthrown by poverty and will be ruined. He then challenges Zoobie: “You don’t want that on your sensitive conscience now, do you?”
Zoobie capitulates, and Leroy takes that as his agreement that he can stay there. Leroy tells him that it’s settled, that he will stay at his house tomorrow night, and that he would like the Master bedroom all to himself. How brazen!
This comic reminds us of Proverbs 12:7: “The wicked are overthrown, and are no more, but the house of the righteous shall stand.” Leroy, representing the wicked here, is on the brink of being overthrown by his foolishness. Sadly, with the path Leroy is on, his end is desolation. Zoobie represents the other path, trying to get your house in order so it stands. But as an old mentor said, “Show me your friends and I will show you your future.” Despite his desire to have his house established rightly, having a friend like Leroy can make that crash down like a house of cards.
May we learn to be a wise friend, following Jesus with our lives so our houses can be established in righteousness. And may we choose friends who will help us toward those ends!
