Proverbs 12:6:
The words of the wicked are about lying in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.
The seventy-third comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy walking into the bar, frustrated that Val was not home (in the last comic, he decided to go see her at her house, despite being warned not to). When he arrives back at the bar, Javier (or “beer guy” as Leroy calls him) tells him even though he doesn’t have a place to stay, he can’t stay at the bar either.
Leroy, of course, balks at this and replies that he is the bar’s best customer. Javier responds that even though that’s the case, he’s been at the bar long enough for that day and it’s time for him to leave.
Leroy is not happy about this. He whines that his family threw him out (even though in reality, he left on his own), and now his beer guy is doing the same. He tells him to not come crying to him when he needs help.
In the next panel, we see Leroy standing outside with a crowbar in his hands. Zoobie walks out and sees Leroy and asks him what he is doing. Leroy tells him he’s waiting to beat up that nasty old beer guy. This
reminds us of the first part of Proverbs 12:6: “The words of the wicked are about lying in wait for blood…”
Zoobie spits out his drink and exclaims loudly, “Beat up the beer guy?!” Javier hears this from inside and shouts out, “Beat me up? Good luck with that!” This shows us the second part of Proverbs 12:6, that the “speech of the upright rescues them.”
Leroy is not happy that Zoobie spoiled his surprise for Javier. He curses him and his overactive conscience, and tells him that he needs to shut his trap. Leroy tells him that every time his mouth is open, only foolishness comes out. As the comic ends, Zoobie, catching the irony of the statement, tells him that makes the two of them.
This comic shows us about the power of our words: the words of the wicked are about hurting others, but the words of the upright brings rescue and deliverance. Proverbs 18:21 tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. May we be a people who, because of Jesus, love to bless instead of curse, bringing life instead of death with our words.
