Proverbs 12:5:
The thoughts of the righteous is just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.
The seventy-second comic of Fools Made Wise starts with James getting a phone call from Leroy, looking for advice. Leroy tells James that he’s tried calling that babe from the bar ten times but she hasn’t yet returned his calls. His conclusion: maybe he should surprise her at her house (remember, she’s married! Not a good idea!)
James offers Leroy an alternative solution: that he should take this as a sign from God, do the right thing, and move on. This reminds us of the first part of Proverbs 12:5: “The thoughts of the righteous are just.”
Of course, Leroy balks at this and scolds himself for not knowing that James’ advice was going to be laced with “religious jargon.” He thanks him for nothing, hangs up on him, and calls Petey next.
Leroy tells Petey the same thing (namely that he is in a pickle not being able to get a hold of the babe from the bar). Not one to think too wisely, Petey encourages Leroy to just go to her house, and
assures Leroy she would like that. This reminds us of the second part of Proverbs 12:5, “The advice of the wicked is deceitful.”
Leroy LOVES that advice and tells Petey that is the best idea he heard all day! Petey cuts back in, and asks for his car back. But in typical Leroy fashion, he pretends that the call is breaking up and hangs up on Petey. The strip ends with Leroy congratulating himself for his brilliance and heading out to Val’s house.
This strip reminds us of the importance of having WISE counsel in our lives. Sometimes when we have a foolish idea, the wisest thing we can do is to talk it through with someone wiser than us. But an equally wise choice is to ACT on their advice. It doesn’t do a whole lot of good to know the right thing to do, but not do it. So may Jesus give us the grace to listen to wise counsel AND to the grace to act on it!
