Proverbs 11:27:
He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, but he who searches after evil, it shall come to him.
The fifty-ninth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with James and Leroy serving at the Ravenport Rescue Mission. Leroy is whining about being there, and tells James he doesn’t like how the people there are looking at him.
James tells Leroy they are there to give back, because that is how they get treasures in heaven. This reminds us of the first part of Proverbs 11:27, that “He who diligently seeks good seeks favor.” It also reminds us of Jesus’ teaching about storing up treasures in heaven by giving here on earth (Matthew 6:1-2;
19-24).
Leroy responds that what he needs is treasures on earth, as he grabs the scoop from James. He tells Skippy (from comic #56) that he doesn’t like how he looked at him earlier. So that’s one scoop of potatoes for him. And he tells Mr. Dinkle (from comic #42) that he hates his shirt and that he can get some food after he changes.
Always ready for a fight, Mr. Dinkle fires back, “Don’t like my shirt? I don’t like your face!” Leroy is ready to rumble, and tells him, “You want to go, old man? You’ll be wearing this food when Leroy’s done with you!” This completely unnecessary altercation shows us the second part of Provebrs 11:27, that “He who searches after evil, it shall come to him.” Unfortunately, this describes Leroy all too often.
So may we learn from this comic that we have a choice: we can SEEK AFTER GOOD and watch how God brings blessings and favor with it. Or we can seek after evil, and get all sorts of evil with it. May we, with Jesus’ help, make the WISE choice of seeking after the good of others (for their benefit and ours).
