Fools Made Wise #41

Proverbs 11:9:

With his mouth, the godless man destroys his neighbor, but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge.

The forty-first comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Pop and Mom’s neighbor, Mr. Sanderson, asking Leroy where he’s been. He tells him that the news from the grapevine was that he was arrested for bad-mouthing a cop (see comic #40 for that!).

Leroy tells “Gimpy” to check his sources (Mr. Sanderson is anything BUT gimpy). In Leroy’s mind, the only reason he was arrested was because that cop needed to reach his quota.

In the next panel, Mr. Sanderson notices that the shovel Leroy is leaning against looks exactly like his shovel that went missing last week (see comic #38 for that). Leroy scoffs at this and tells him to move along before he destroys him with it. This shows us the first part of Proverbs 11:9 that “with his mouth, the godless man destroys his neighbor.”

Certainly not a fan of how Leroy just disrespected him, Mr. Sanderson tells him to never speak to him like that again, and to give him his shovel back before he busts him for trespassing.

Realizing the situation is escalating, James gives Mr. Sanderson a brand new shovel. James tells him he had a hunch that his went missing recently. Mr. Sanderson gladly receives the new shovel from James and tells him how glad he is that his father has someone like James watching out for him. In truth, Leroy’s actions are liable to ruin their fathers’ stellar reputation by his stealing things and running his idiotic mouth. This shows us the second part of Proverbs 11:9, that “the righteous will be delivered through knowledge.”

This comic ends with Leroy still not getting it. He calls Mr. Sanderson “Gimpy” again, and asks him if he likes Leroy’s new gloves? He tells him, with a smirk on his face, that they feel nice and worn in, too… Oh, Leroy…

This comic shows us that we have a choice how we are going to live this life: are we going to use our mouth and actions to hurt our neighbors? There’s a better path: because of what Jesus did for us, we can use our mouths and actions to bless our neighbors the way that God has blessed us. One path leads to destruction; the other to life. Which will we choose?
