Proverbs 10:16:
The labor of the righteous leads to life. The increase of the wicked leads to sin.
The sixteenth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with James asking Leroy what he is watching. Leroy responds that he is watching his favorite show, Sharks in the Water. Leroy tells James that the guy on the show has EVERYTHING he has ever wanted, and that he would give up his SOUL to be like him. This reminds of the second part of Proverbs 10:16, that the increase of the wicked leads to sin.
James picks up on this, and tells Leroy that the guy he so badly wants to be like is nothing but a snake. He tells him that the more that guy gets, the more he becomes his own god. James tells Leroy it’d be way wiser to pursue something that could give him lasting life instead (showing the first part of Proverbs 10:16, that the labor of the righteous leads to life).
Ignoring James’ advice, Leroy grabs a pen and paper and wonders out loud if the guy needs an intern. As the strip ends, Leroy asks James how “Dear Excellent Master” sounds. James replies that it is a surprisingly fitting way to address the letter since acquiring material things (and the life it gives him) IS Leroy’s true Master. Oh, Leroy…
Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Thank goodness we have a Savior who left Heaven, came here to earth, and who emptied Himself of all He had in Heaven so He could make us rich in faith through Him. Someone or something is going to be the Master of our lives… who or what is that going to be?
