Recently, as you may have heard on the news, Governor Andrew Cuomo has called on New York shelters to improve their facilities and services to the homeless. Some shelters are dirty, smelly, and unsafe. They have not kept up their standards and they need to be held accountable.
However, here at Capital City Rescue Mission, we have worked hard through the years to keep our facilities and services to the homeless the best we can make them. We are clean, our floors are shiny, our bed linens are changed every day, we serve 750 nutritious meals daily and distribute clean clothing for all of our guests. The Mission and its staff work tirelessly to keep things in “ship shape.”
We agree with the governor that shelters in NY need to be their best when caring for the needy. However, we answer to an even higher authority – King Jesus set a very high standard. He said, “‘For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me.’ The righteous will say, ‘When did we see you hungry and feed you?’ The King will answer then, ‘Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'”
If you knew the Lord was coming to your house as a guest tonight how would you prepare? Here at the Rescue Mission we are serving the needy as we would serve Jesus because that is exactly what we are doing – serving Him.
