Proverbs 1:3-6:
to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man: that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel: to understand a proverb and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.
The sixty-sixth comic of Fools Made Wise is the second comic of three of Pop’s first letter to Leroy (Proverbs 1-9 are letters from a father to his son, imploring him to choose wisdom over foolishness).
Pop continues his letter by telling Leroy that he wants to give him instruction in how to deal with people God’s way— to be wise, good, and fair to them, like He is with us.
Pop wants to depart SKILLS to Leroy: prudence (which he defines as a good kind of cleverness and the ability to make wise plans), knowledge, and discretion. Pop tells Leroy these are good skills to have.
Pop implores Leroy to listen to him, sharing that his father shared incredible wisdom with him, and it shaped his life for the better. Pop wants the same for Leroy.
The entire contents of the second part of Pop’s letter come straight from Proverbs 1:3-6: “to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man: that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel: to understand a proverb and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.”
This is what Solomon wanted for his son, and this is what Pop wants for Leroy. Pop ends by asking Leroy to imagine the insight he’d gain by listening and practicing his letters to him, and even reminds Leroy of his own words, how “Ol’ Royski’s is good for it.”
There is so much here that we could take an apply: treating other people fairly, having prudence, knowledge, discretion, listening to instruction, etc. Perhaps the wisest thing we can do is ask Jesus: what one thing do you want me to do with this?
