Fools Made Wise #34

Proverbs 11:2:

When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom.

The thirty-fourth comic of Fools Made Wise starts with Leroy ransacking Pop and Mom’s room for items that would be useful for his upcoming adventure. James walks in, is in shock over the mess Leroy made, and asks him what he was doing in his room as well. Leroy denies this, swearing that he wasn’t even in James’ room. (C’mon, Leroy, really?!)

James fires back that Leroy WAS in his room, because all his dresser drawers were ransacked and he is missing his gold watch. Leroy replies that he has never stolen a thing in his life, and he is darn proud of that, too. James realizes he isn’t getting anywhere with Leroy, so he asks him (wisely) if he has the time. This shows us the second part of Proverbs 11:2, that with humility comes wisdom.

Taking the bait, Leroy rolls up his sleeve to look at his watch, and it just so happens that James’ gold watch is there on his arm! Leroy nervously tries to laugh it off, while James asks him to hand it over.

The strip ends with Leroy handing the gold watch over because he can’t read one of them to save his life. This shows us the first part of Proverbs 11:2, that when pride comes, then comes shame.

This comic shows us the difference between pride and humility. When we are humble, we can think clearly and demonstrate wisdom. But when we are proud, clouded by our own sin, shame usually follows quickly behind our pride.

So with Jesus’ help this new year, may we reject our proud schemes, and instead grow in a humility that leads to wisdom.
