Proverbs 10:31:
The mouth of the righteous produces wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
The thirty-first comic of Fools Made Wise starts with James asking Leroy if he is still mad (in comic 30, James told Pop that Leroy was writing down hours on his time sheet that he wasn’t actually working).
Leroy calls James a snitch, tells him of course he is still angry, and asks how he could rat Leroy out like that. James tells him that he was doing the right thing, and reminds Leroy that Pop has bent over backwards to keep him around here. After all Pop has done, he deserves the truth. This shows us the first part of Proverbs 10:31, that the mouth of the righteous produces wisdom.
Of course, Leroy doesn’t like this and begins to mock James. “Ooo, I had to tell dad because I’m a RAT! You jerk!” And right as Leroy is going to light into him, James cuts him off. James tells him that there are a LOT of other things he could have, and could still, tell Pop about Leroy’s shenanigans. He tells Leroy he would be wise to get over this, and to do so quickly. This shows us the
second part of Proverbs 10:31: the perverse tongue will be cut off.
Finally waking up the gravity of the situation, Leroy tells James to cool down, and that he just had a change of heart. He tells James that there is no need to spill the beans all over the place, and
offers to buy James a slice of pizza to smooth things over.
James tells Leroy he doesn’t want a slice of pizza, and Leroy is relieved because he doesn’t have money to pay for it anyway. The comic ends with Leroy asking James to buy him a slice. Oh, Leroy…
This comic reminds us that because of Jesus, our words should be bringing wisdom into others’ lives. We aren’t guaranteed their response, but we are charged to use our words for good.
